Cockroaches

HAVING TROUBLE WITH COCKROACHES?

One of the historically oldest, best-known and most hated pests, cockroaches are common throughout the country. These insects are capable of flight, but are most often seen crawling around a home. They prefer darkness and will usually hide in dimly-lit cramped near to the wall areas, and are seen to be visibly scattering when a light is turned on in a room.

Cockroaches are relatively solitary insects. They do not live in colonies like ants or termites do. However, with the right conditions, a single home can host scores of roaches as roaches breed very quickly. A single female cockroach will lay up to 150 eggs in her lifetime, and roaches can lay eggs as often as twice a week. This means that if an infestation is left untreated, it is true that a small handful of roaches can quickly turn into a massive infestation in the home or shared office spaces.

All cockroaches are extremely hardy and can become resistant to poisons, which is why DIY pest control methods are often ineffective to get rid of them. Because roaches can breed very quickly, a few bugs can easily turn into an infestation, and fast!

TYPES OF COCKROACHES

There are three common types of cockroaches that can be found within the home: American or “sewer,” German, and Oriental cockroaches. No matter what species, all roaches can be a big problem for home and business owners.

– American Cockroach: Also called a sewer roach, they are the largest type of roach, measuring up to 2 inches long. They are most commonly found in moist areas such as sewers, basements, crawl spaces, etc. They sometimes venture inside the home through plumbing lines to escape the pesticides periodically sprayed in the sewers.

– German Cockroach: By far the most common type of roach found in the home, these small, ½ inch-long brown roaches are often associated with human food areas such as kitchens, pantries, drawers, closets or other darkened storage areas. They are extremely prolific and reproduce faster than any other type of cockroach.

– Oriental Cockroach: These 1 inch-long, dark brown roaches are commonly found outside the home in areas with decaying landscape materials. They can be found in dark, moist areas which can include under stones, in mulch piles, or bushes. Occasionally, they can find their way into the home through door thresholds, through utility pipes, or by simply walking along the plumbing lines.

WHY COCKROACHES ARE A PROBLEM

In addition to being unsightly, cockroaches can pose a health hazard to your home and family. The dirt-like grains of roach droppings and the signature “musty” smell emitted by some roach species can be allergenic, leading to air quality problems and breathing issues for some people who are sensitive to these allergens.

These pests are not just an allergen for people with compromised immune systems, have asthma or have allergies, but they can be a hazard for anyone with a respiratory disease who lives in the home or has to come into close contact with the roach dropping or pests themselves.

Roaches can also carry diseases, including e. coli. Any food that is accessible to a roach, especially food that is stored in pantry areas, can be contaminated by roach droppings and diseases that are carried on their bodies. Because roaches spend a lot of their time in garbage, sewers and other unsanitary places, they are exposed to a number of potentially dangerous pathogens, that will be invisible to the eye, but that will easily contaminate the food resources in your home and office areas.

Even food in a pantry that is in protective canisters can become contaminated. Once the roaches roam around in a food pantry and track across even closed and sealed food resources, they are contaminating the food. Once a person touches the food canister to open the food, the droppings from the roaches can get onto the individual's hands. Then, if the person puts his or her hands to the mouth, then the contamination has spread easily and health hazards may be the result of this type of exposure.

Even the careful person could find himself or herself in this situation. Remember, roaches come to any type of home, they are not known to only come to one home and not another, no home is immune from developing a roach population if the conditions are right.

DO YOU HAVE A ROACH PROBLEM?

Cockroaches are unwelcome guests in any home. If you’ve found roaches in your home or business, it’s often a good sign that there are many more hidden out of sight within the walls, under the floor or along the baseboards. Because roaches are so difficult to eradicate, professional intervention is often the best and only recourse. If you try to rid the roaches using sprays, be aware that they will come back once the store bought spray dissipates. It is better to call in the professionals right now, to get rid of this problem pronto!

It is also worthy to note that swatting or stomping on roaches will not get rid of the problem, but will definitely make it worse! When you step on a roach, you run the risk that the bugs will hid out in the tread of your shoes instead of be killed, and you will basically become a transportation device for them to travel to different locations on the bottom of your shoes. Also, if you step on a roach you can run the chance that you are stepping on roach eggs, which you will also seemingly unwillingly transport to other areas that were previously not infested.
